Tuesday recap – Grizzlies starter Cesar Valdez (9-1) allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings to win his third straight start as Fresno edged the Las Vegas 51s 1-0 at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies scored the game’s only run on Tyler White’s RBI single in the fifth inning. Jordan Jankowski and James Hoyt each pitched an inning to finish off the Grizzlies’ 11th shutout of the season, with Hoyt closing for his PCL-leading 27th save.
Fast pace – The time of the game was a crisp 2:05, though the Grizzlies’ quickest game this year was a four-hit, 2-0 complete game victory by Brady Rodgers against Reno on May 4 in 1:57.
Up next – Fresno RH Edison Frias will make his Triple-A debut against the Las Vegas 51s and a pitcher to be named later at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Chukchansi Park. Frias joined the Grizzlies on Monday, replacing Tommy Shirley in the rotation after Shirley was released by the Astros. Frias went 4-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 15 outings (10 starts) at Double-A Corpus Christi and was a Texas League All-Star. He gave up just one earned run and struck out five in each of his previous two starts (combined 13 innings) for the Hooks.
Rockin’ return – A.J. Reed entered Tuesday 5 for 10 since returning to the Grizzlies from Houston, though he went 0 for 4 Tuesday.
On track – Fresno is 30-11 since June 11 when it was a season-low 10 games under .500. Tuesday’s win moved the Grizzlies to a season-high nine games over .500.
