Wednesday recap – John Kemmer’s pinch-hit, three run home run capped a six-run top of the seventh inning that sent Fresno to an 8-5 victory over host Round Rock on Wednesday in the Pacific Coast League. Kemmer’s sixth homer of the season, which followed an RBI single by Preston Tucker and a two-run single by Colin Moran, gave Fresno an 8-3 lead. The Grizzlies opened a 2-0 lead in the sixth on Moran’s run-scoring double and an RBI single by Jack Mayfield before Round Rock scored three to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Round Rock got to Fresno starter Cesar Valdez for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Reymin Guduan and James Hoyt came on to shut the Express out over the final 2.1 innings. Hoyt picked up his 25th save, while Valdez improved to 8-1 after working 6.2 innings. Grizzlies shortstop Alex Bregman, a top prospect of the Houston Astros, went 3 for 5 to raise his average to .388 in 15 games since his promotion to Fresno.
Up next – Fresno LH Tommy Shirley (7-6, 5.22 ERA) faces Round Rock LH Michael Roth (7-3, 2.49) in Thursday’s series finale, with first pitch at 5:05 p.m. After winning four straight starts from June 14 through July 2, Shirley has dropped two straight while allowing six runs at home versus Reno and at New Orleans. Home runs have been an issue, with Shirley allowing five in those two games after allowing eight in his first 15 starts. Right-handers have hit 12 of the homers and are batting .332. Roth, a ninth-round choice by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2012 draft, won a pair of College World Series titles with South Carolina – going 4-0 with a 1.49 ERA in his CWS career.
More on Musgrove – Grizzlies starter Joe Musgrove matched his season high with his seven-inning outing Tuesday and set a high in strikeouts with nine. The right-hander, ranked seventh among Houston Astros prospects and No. 97 overall by mlb.com, has fanned 50 and walked six in 52 innings with Fresno and struck out 80 while walking nine in 78.1 innings overall when adding six games to start the year at Double-A Corpus Christi.
