Friday recap – Robert Andino triggered a four-run bottom of the first with a leadoff homer, added a two-run shot in the fourth and New Orleans beat Fresno 9-5 in Game 2 of a Pacific Coast League series at Zephyr Field. Andino, 32, who was 3 for 5 with three runs, has 12 homers on the year, one off his minor-league high. He has 18 in 1,320 big-league at-bats. The Grizzlies’ Tyler White extended his hitting streak to 11 with a second-inning homer, Alex Bregman pushed his to 10 with a double in the seventh and Teoscar Hernandez is at eight after a single in the sixth.
Up next – Grizzlies RH Mike Hauschild (7-7, 2.71 ERA) will make his 17th start of the season against a New Orleans starter to be named as the four-game series continues at 4 p.m. Saturday. Hauschild is coming off his best start of the season, striking out nine while allowing two hits in eight innings in a 14-0 win against Reno on July 7. It was his ninth quality start, tied with fellow PCL All-Star Brady Rodgers for the team lead.
Cesar puede – Fresno RH Cesar Valdez (7-1, 3.19) has been lights out since mid-June, with wins in five straight starts after Thursday’s 6-2 victory against New Orleans. Valdez, a 31-year-old from the Dominican Republic, began his big run June 16 with a one-hit shutout at Sacramento. In his past five starts, Valdez has given up five earned runs in 36 innings (1.25 ERA), allowing 24 hits while striking out 28 and walking two.
Roster move – Infielder Jack Mayfield rejoined the Grizzlies from Double-A Corpus Christi. Mayfield, 25, who signed as a free agent with the Houston Astros in 2013 after his college career at Oklahoma, saw action in 29 games from May 13-June 26 with Fresno. He hit .229 with 15 RBIs in 83 at-bats.
