Friday recap – A day after impressive Triple-A debuts, Fresno’s Alex Bregman and Teoscar Hernandez homered as the Grizzlies beat Salt Lake 4-1 and moved back above .500 in the Pacific Coast League Pacific North. Mike Hauschild (6-7) pitched three-hit ball for five innings and fellow Triple-A All-Star James Hoyt picked up his PCL-best 20th save before a fireworks Friday crowd of 11,016 at Smith’s Ballpark in downtown Salt Lake City.
Up next – Fresno LH Tommy Shirley (6-4, 4.88 ERA) faces LH David Huff (1-3, 5.70) as the Grizzlies continue the four-game series and trip. Shirley took advantage of an offense starting to rediscover its groove to go 3-1 in June, despite a 6.29 ERA. The road has been kinder, with Shirley 4-2 with a 3.00 ERA away from Chukchansi Park. Huff has 393 major-league innings on his résumé. He pitched in 16 games for San Francisco in 2014 and made one rehab start that year for the Grizzlies in their final season as the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate.
Thursday recap – Preston Tucker delivered the most productive night of his pro career and Bregman and Hernandez arrived with a bang as Fresno pounded Salt Lake 23-3. Tucker went 5 for 6 with a double, three home runs, five runs and eight RBIs to power a 21-hit attack. Tucker ripped two-run homers in the first, third and eighth innings, an RBI single in the fourth and a run-scoring double in the sixth. Bregman and Hernandez, promoted earlier in the day from the parent Houston Astros’ Double-A affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas, each contributed four hits. Bregman scored five runs and drove in three. Hernandez tripled, homered and drove in three.
