This was a County/Metro Athletic Conference game at Sunnyside Stadium on Friday night that joined two of the coaching pillars of Central Section football - Clovis North High's Tim Simons and Hoover's Pat Plummer.

They arrived with a combined 401 victories in 57 seasons.

Then the game started and another man took over.

He goes by Eric Kendricks, he's 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, strong, fast, balanced and smart. And on a night his Hoover Patriots played a Clovis North team without seniors, well, it was man against the boys.

Kendricks scored five times - three rushing, one receiving and one on an interception - as No. 14 Hoover totaled 410 yards and extended one of its best starts in years by defeating the No. 17 Broncos 37-19.

Mychal Kendricks, Eric Kendricks' brother and Cal's starting middle linebacker, had to be smiling after little brother carried 18 times for 163 yards, caught two passes for 37 yards and returned his theft 25 yards for the score.

"Actually, I wasn't paying attention [to the touchdowns]," Eric Kendricks said. "Our team was doing really good against a Clovis school, which we haven't beaten in a while. That was the main objective."

He's being courted by every Pac-10 school but USC, in addition to Fresno State, Nevada and Harvard.

"He's a special kid," Plummer said. "You see a running back like that kid with great vision and just bouncing off tackles, which propels him downfield. He's a special guy and this is a special team."

The Patriots (6-1, 2-0), gunning for their first league title in 10 years, are tied with No. 2 Bullard atop the CMAC with a showdown against No. 5 Edison (4-3, 1-1) looming Friday at McLane.
