Memorial 15, Hoover 12
Playing its second game in six nights, No. 11 Memorial found its stride late in the game Friday night to defeat No. 14 Hoover 15-12 and remain undefeated.
Christian Garcia scored his second touchdown on a 6-yard run with 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter, and Bryant Cummings and John Savage connected on a conversion pass for a three-point lead, before the Panthers turned to their defense to preserve the nonleague victory at McLane.
Memorial (4-0) had three second-half interceptions -- two by junior safety James Huelskamp and the other by senior cornerback Jon Andreasen -- while escaping shorthanded against the Patriots (3-1).
The Panthers dressed 28 players on a night leading rusher Chris Brown was out with the flu and strong-side linebacker David Whittemore with a knee injury.
Memorial coach Anthony Goston expects them to return for next Friday's game at top-ranked Buchanan (4-0).
"We found a way to win [against Hoover]," he said. "We'll try to get some rest and, hopefully, play well against Buchanan."
Clovis 21, Sanger 12
Trey Mitchell passed for 168 yards and three touchdowns, as the Cougars scored 21 straight points and held on to beat the Apaches at Tom Flores Stadium.
Mitchell and Beau Hine hooked up on scoring pass plays of 8 and 9 yards. Tyler Ryska also caught a 19-yard pass for a touchdown.
Sanger made a late run with 12 points in the third quarter. Vincent Enriquez and Adrian Villegas each had a 6-yard touchdown run.
Washington 54, Selma 34
Quarterback Adam McCurley had a career night with five passing touchdowns and two rushing in a nonleague blowout in Selma.
McCurley completed 20 of 26 passes for 388 yards. His favorite target, Donald Phelps, caught scoring passes of 54, 11 and 16 yards.
Anthony Martinez led Selma with a 53-yard touchdown reception and an 87-yard kickoff return. Raul Herrera also scored on runs of 9, 5 and 4 yards.
Fowler 22, Lindsay 21
The Redcats, top-ranked in Division V, barely hung on, as the Cardinals' Jaime Lopez missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt as time expired -- handing Lindsay a tough first defeat.
Fowler took the lead with 1:40 remaining on Kenny Corona's 3-yard touchdown run. Corona finished with 129 passing yards and accounted for two touchdowns, including one through the air.
Fresno Christian 40, Kings Christian 6
The Eagles beat the host Crusaders behind Landon Martens' 192 yards rushing on 23 carries and four touchdowns.
Martens rattled off scoring runs of 16, 40, 28 and 15 yards.
Caruthers 41, Firebaugh 26
Juan Avalos rushed for 181 yards and had five touchdowns for the Blue Raiders.
Avalos scoring on runs of 12, 14, 26 and 2 yards, and also returned an interception 2 yards for a touchdown.
Firebaugh's Carlos Ramos ran for 62 yards and scores of 3, 2 and 1 yards.
Orange Cove 28, Strathmore 24 Jose Ochoa's third touchdown of the game, a 9-yard run with 2:30 remaining, lifted Orange Cove past Strathmore 28-24 in a nonleague game Friday night.
Ochoa finished with 11 carries for 82 yards and also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Murdoch as the Titans picked up their first win of the season after three losses.
Strathmore, which entered as the top-ranked team by The Bee in Division VI, got 98 rushing yards and a touchdown from Jessie Soria. The Spartans led 24-15 entering the fourth quarter.
Orange Cove came in No. 3 in D-VI.
Tulare 58, Chavez 0
Xavier Stephens rushed for 94 yards and four touchdowns to lead the No. 6 Redskins in their East Yosemite League opener.
