THE BUZZ
Buchanan quarterbacks Lance Orender (9 of 11) and Taylor Genuser (6 of 6) completed 88.2% of their pass attempts in the Bears' 50-7 rout of Sanger. Last season, when John Sexton took over as offensive coordinator after assisting Clovis for 35 years, Orender (148 of 226) and Genuser (88 of 128) combined for 66.2% accuracy out of the spread formation.
Central, which surged into the rankings after compiling 440 yards (350 rushing) in a 49-28 win over Clovis North, will open the season with three consecutive home games. And that includes a Sept. 18 west-side showdown with Edison in a game where the Grizzlies will actually have a speed advantage.
Atascadero, which thumped then-No. 8 Clovis East 33-21 at Lamonica Stadium, is a D-II program from the Southern Section that went 27-8 the past three seasons.
Clovis East seniors haven't lost consecutive games in the same season in school history, beginning in 2002 with the Timberwolves' first senior class. But that streak will be in serious jeopardy Friday at Redlands East Valley, which is ranked 28th in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.
