Michigan recruit slows down CVC boys
Darius Morris showed Central Valley Christian High why he's taking his game to perennial college basketball power Michigan next season.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard scored 12 of his 24 points in the third quarter to help Division V top-seeded Windward-Los Angeles break open a close game and pull away from the No. 4 Cavaliers for an 80-67 victory Thursday in a semifinal of the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs.
The Wildcats (27-6) held a slim 34-29 lead at halftime against the Central Section champion Cavaliers (28-5) before Morris took over. Morris' flurry helped Windward extend its lead to 61-46 at the end of the third quarter. He scored four of Windward's first six points of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 66-46.

Hanford West boys claim title
Rodney Webster, nephew of a former major league pitcher, threw a curveball at top-seeded Ridgeview High while delivering another Central Section basketball title for the city of Hanford on Saturday at Selland Arena.
Webster, whose uncle, Ryan Bowen, made the bigs out of Hanford High, provided 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals as third-seeded Hanford West secured its first section crown with a 54-45 victory in Division III.
This followed a section title Friday by Hanford High's girls in D-II and a sweep by the Bullpups' boys and girls last year in D-III.

Clovis West golfers eye title
Powered by four four-year starters, Clovis West High shoots for its fourth consecutive Central Section girls team golf championship today at Tulare Golf Course.
Golden Eagles senior standout Asia Adell will be in the first threesome -- along with Redwood's Christina Trujillo and Stockdale's Abby Marina -- set to tee off at 10 a.m. The final grouping -- Yosemite's Mariana Moberly, Mission Oak's Breanna Haney and Frontier's Lexi Keeter -- tees off at 12:16 p.m.
Adell shot a 3-under 69 last Monday at Madera Municipal Golf Course as Clovis West won the North Area championship with the best team round on a regulation course in section history at 378. Clovis West had the previous record, a 391 set last year at Madera Muni.

Buchanan, Clovis West top volleyball seedings
The winners of the past four Central Section Division I volleyball championships are favored to play each other for another title - if playoff seedings announced Friday hold to form.
Buchanan High, which won three consecutive titles between 2005-07, was given the top seed while defending champion and Tri-River Athletic Conference rival Clovis West earned the second seed in a 10-team bracket.
Both schools drew first-round byes. Buchanan begins pursuit of its eighth section title Thursday against No. 8 Stockdale or No. 9 Clovis. Clovis West opens against No. 7 Madera or No. 10 Clovis East.

Central boys in a giving mood
The most impressive assist of the season for Central High's boys basketball team occurred Thursday, when the Grizzlies didn't play a game.
It was provided by Rakim Brown, their most valuable player, who took the shirt off his back and gave it to non-starter Amit Dhillon.
"That's why we're going places. We're learning what it takes to be a true team," said coach Loren LeBeau, whose second-seeded team is going to Selland Arena on Saturday at 8 p.m. to play No. 5 Edison in a westside shootout for the Central Section Division I championship.
Hanford's D-II girls, one of three section teams standing in the SoCal Regionals, will visit Brea Olinda-Brea (30-2) tonight, five weeks after losing 78-67 at home to the Orange County power.
The third-seeded Bullpups (26-4) led that one by six at halftime and were tied, 62-62, with 4 minutes to go before being knocked out by Wildcats point guard Jonae Ervin, who toyed with Hanford's signature full-court press and finished with 37 points.
And the Bullpups will apply pressure again, assistant coach Joshua Parrish said: "Yep, we are, but she's not going to get 37 against us this time, that's for sure. We've made adjustments."
- Fresno Christian's girls, seeded fifth in D-V, will travel to Burbank to oppose top-seeded Bellarmine-Jefferson (31-1), which is 17th-ranked in Cal-Hi Sports' overall top 20.
Surely a bit weary will be Fresno Christian (22-6), which won 58-47 at Christian Life-San Diego Tuesday night, returned home at 3 a.m. Wednesday and then attended school for half a day before aiming back south for Southern California.
The Eagles were mistaken in thinking going to classes for at least half a day was mandated by the CIF the day before a game. Section commissioner Jim Crichlow said such rules are established by schools and districts.
- Here's all Central Valley Christian's boys (28-4) will confront at top-seeded Windward-Los Angeles (26-6) in D-V: point guard Darius Morris, who's going to Michigan; center Anthony Stover, who has signed with UCLA; and sharpshooter Malcolm Washington, the son of actor Denzel Washington.
"They will be a challenge," Cavaliers coach Blake Van Der Schaaf said, "but if we play like we have been, we have a great chance."
