John Williamson scored 26 points for the Kingsburg High boys basketball team Monday night.
None were bigger than the two free throws he sank with 30 seconds remaining that put the Vikings ahead for good en route to an 80-76 victory over the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Division IV playoffs.
It's Kingsburg's first SoCal Regional playoff victory.
"This is a really big win for our program and our school," Vikings coach Mark Bray said. "We've got kids answering the bell. They showed a lot of grit."
Kingsburg (18-12) advances and will remain on the road to face top-seeded Southern Section champion Bishop Montgomery-Torrance (25-4) at 7 p.m. today.
The Central Section D-IV runner-up opened a 12-2 lead in the first quarter, but LACES (16-18) eventually took the lead in the fourth quarter. Williamson's free throws gave Kingsburg a 78-76 lead.
In the first half, Williamson scored 18 points and Tyler Bray scored 21 of his 25 as the Vikings built a 50-37 lead.
As Bray sat out much of the third quarter in foul trouble, Nico Canto (12 points) and Michael Torres (10 points) picked up the pace.
