The difference in 0.5 seconds turned out to be roughly a 220-mile drive.
The Edison High boys basketball team captured the Central Section Division I title Saturday with a 66-65 win over Central -- on a buzzer-beater launched sometime before the 0.5 seconds on the clock expired.
For that, Edison (24-6) will get to stay at home and host national power Fairfax-Los Angeles (25-4) at 7 p.m. today in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.
Central (22-8), meanwhile, will have to trek to national power Westchester-Los Angeles (30-2).
Fairfax and Westchester are nationally ranked Nos. 11 and 12, respectively, in the USA Today Super 25.
The CIF released the brackets of the state basketball playoffs Sunday. All section champions get to host an opening-round game.

On the girls side, Hanford (25-4), which might represent the Central Section's best chance of winning a state crown, hosts Beverly Hills (24-9) on Tuesday. Hanford was a 73-44 winner against Garces in the D-II championships. Hanford did not lose to a Central Section team all season.
