Gap in Tulare football bone of contention
What most of us don't know, perhaps even in Tulare County, is that Tulare Western High won 11 East Yosemite League championships last year in 21 opportunities while capturing that conference's all-sports trophy.
But many more of us -- and sure as heck in Tulare County -- know this: In football last Friday, Tulare won its 22nd straight regular season game while Tulare Western won for the first time in three years.
"We also won Valley championships last year in boys soccer and girls softball," Western athletic director Dereck Domingues says, "but the only sport people focus on is football."

Central softball gets another shot at Stockdale
Justine Vela pitched in just six games as a freshman for Stockdale High last season.
But Central softball coach Scott Gorton remembers one of them quite well.
Vela fired a four-hitter in Stockdale's 2-1 victory over Central at the Buchanan Preseason Tournament.
The Tulare Western High softball team made good on its word.
Brianne Hardman stranded the potential tying run at second base in the top of the seventh inning by striking out the No. 4 batter as the top-seeded Mustangs held off No. 2 Golden West 3-2 for the Central Section Division II softball title Thursday.
"We were looking forward to it all year," Mustangs coach Steve Bullock said. "At the first practice we had this year, the girls told me they were going to win Valley and they came through. They did what they said they were going to do."
Tulare Western (27-7) scored the eventual winning run in a two-run fifth-inning on Chassitti Arriola's bases-loaded single.
Golden West (22-13) rallied late in the game, scoring in the sixth to slice the lead to 3-1. An RBI single by Jessica Duran made it 3-2 in the seventh, but Hardman's sixth strikeout of the game ended it.
"It was two teams that were on a roll and something had to give," Golden West coach Stephen Green said. "We unfortunately made some errors and they capitalized."
