BALLS, BATS AND BUZZ

Ask Andrew Rich, the multiposition standout from Washington, who the Central Section's best pitcher is and he doesn't hesitate: "Sean Silva." Yet, interestingly, Rich has what Clovis West's Silva doesn't -- a college scholarship. Rich, who has played years of summer travel ball with Silva, will extend his baseball career at UC Davis. Silva is a recruited walk-on at Fresno State and has also been offered a scholarship at UC Santa Barbara. But the left-hander who has touched 89 mph on the radar gun has seemingly widened the window of college opportunity by going 5-0 with two saves, a 1.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 35 innings for the top-ranked Golden Eagles. "He is proving that he is a scholarship player," Eagles coach Kevin Patrick says. "He certainly is pitching like he has a chip on his shoulder."
