Year: Junior

School: Buchanan

He's qualified because: Led Bears to their first Tri-River Athletic Conference and Central Section Division I titles by placing sixth (15:53) and second (15:33), respectively, in those meets. He then finished 12th in the state D-I race. All three of the events were at Woodward Park's 3.1-mile course.

Defining moment: A week after timing 15:53 in the TRAC finals, he cranked it down to a personal-best 15:33 for the silver-medal performance in the section meet.

The word: "In my heart, I thought he was going to be league champ, but he just didn't have it that day. The Valley meet, however, he turned into the guy he should be. He's very confident, very focused, very motivated and very analytical. It's all there -- just an awesome kid to coach." -- Bears coach Marty Simpson.

Opposing take: "Of the five seasons he has competed so far [three cross country and two track and field], this was by far his best finish at the end of a season. He has matured as a runner both in his running tactics and his toughness. The Buchanan staff has done a great job not only with Jonathan but their entire boys varsity. They are very motivated and capable of winning the state meet in 2008." -- Clovis coach Rob Brenner.
