Clovis High posted an impressive victory Saturday night, but Edison and Clovis East were each soundly beaten in the opening week of the high school football season.
Clovis 36, Burbank-Sacramento 0
The intriguing matchup turned one-sided by halftime when the Cougars led 20-0.
Clovis came in ranked No. 4 in The Fresno Bee’s Central Section preseason rankings. The Titans were No. 9 in The Sacramento Bee’s preseason Top 20.

Quarterback Trey Lake completed 12 of 17 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Clayton Alexander caught all three scores among four receptions for 62 yards, and seven Cougars combined for 145 yards.
The Clovis defense stifled Burbank’s fast, triple-option offense, which was also hampered by 120 penalty yards.
Clovis plays Turlock on Friday at Livingston High. The game was moved from Turlock because Turlock’s home turf is unplayable.
Brophy 33, Edison 0
Rexx Tessler, an All-State linebacker in Arizona, scored on a 10-yard reception and his block of a punt as Brophy College Prep-Phoenix won Saturday afternoon at Ventura College.
Brophy is ranked 10th in Arizona by maxpreps.com.
The game was part of the Under Armour-sponsored Brothers in Arms Classic. Also Saturday at Ventura, Bee No. 8 Bakersfield beat Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove 42-7 and Bee No. 13 Centennial lost to St. Bonaventure-Ventura 45-13.
Edison was ranked No. 9 by The Bee. The Tigers will play at Damonte Ranch-Reno on Friday.
St. Ignatius 56, Clovis East 20
The Timberwolves received scoring passes of 29, 14 and 75 yards from Jeremiah Ochoa to Tanner Tucker, but couldn’t hang with Dan Fouts’ alma mater at the San Francisco school’s Sunset District campus field.
Nicholas Menchero scored twice on receptions as St. Ignatius bolted to a 21-0 lead before Clovis East got within 21-14 with 5:06 to go in the third quarter.
But the Wildcats answered with a pick-6 off a shovel pass and Henri Vatinel’s second touchdown run of the game made it 35-14 with 6:28 to play. St. Ignatius had three defensive scores on the day.
Clovis East, ranked No. 19 in the Central Section, will play Redwood on Friday at Lamonica Stadium.
