Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a series of five spotlighting the fall’s top high school athletes. Coming Friday: Central football player Jaylon Johnson
▪ Year/position: Junior/quarterback
▪ Why he matters: After leading unbeaten teams twice at Kastner Intermediate and then as a freshman on Clovis West’s junior varsity, Martinez established himself on a 6-5 Golden Eagles varsity team as a sophomore. Ranked among the state’s elite as a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder with exceptional throwing and running ability, he passed for 1,672 yards and averaged 6.9 yards per carry while rushing for 902 yards last season.
▪ What’s next: Fresno State and Nevada have offered scholarships in what promises to be a growing chase.
