Blake Hathcoat earned medalist honors while leading Clovis North High to the team title of the Central Section North Area golf tournament at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla.
Hathcoat, a returning Fresno Bee All-Star, fired a 3-under 69 on Monday to win by one stroke over Fresno Christian’s Michael Cliff, The Bee’s 2015 Small Schools Player of the Year.
The top 10 individuals, plus ties, three Division I teams and one D-II team from each of the North, Central and South area tournaments will advance in the section postseason.
The section team championships will be next Monday at Valley Oaks Golf Course in Visalia. The individuals finals will follow at Buena Vista Golf Course in Taft.
Never miss a local story.
Clovis North, with a five-player total of 363, won by 17 strokes over Clovis West, the defending D-I champion and winner of three of the past four.

Track and field – The North Area Meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clovis East will be loaded with state-ranked entries, including Clovis North star Rhesa Foster. But the burning question: Will she actually compete?
“She’ll be there, but I don’t know what we’re going to do with her,” Broncos coach Rich Brazil said.
Foster, signed with 2015 NCAA champion Oregon and ranked third in the state in the long jump (20-2½) and fourth in the 100 high hurdless (14.17), missed last week’s Tri-River Athletic Conference finals with a hamstring strain.
She’s also ranked first in the section in the 100 (11.84) and second in the 200 (24.49).
The top three finishers in each event at the North, Central and South area meets, and the Sequoia-Sierra Championship, automatically qualify for the section Masters Championships on May 21 at Buchanan Veterans Memorial Stadium. At-large entrants will advance from each area meet to balance the Masters field.
Featured in the boys division at the North Area will be Madera South distance runner Eduardo Herrera, Buchanan hurdler Paramveer Chohan and Clovis North and Buchanan throwers McKay Johnson and Jacob Wilson. All are top-five ranked in the state.
The girls division, regardless of Foster’s presence, has state top-five ranked athletes in Buchanan’s defending state 400 champion Hannah Waller, Clovis high jumper Alexis Vincent-Walker, Clovis North pole vaulter Brooke Tjerrild and Fowler freshman discus thrower Jocelyn Budwig.
