The Central Section’s Board of Managers — continuing with commissioner Jim Crichlow’s vision of hosting championships events in professional or college facilities — approved a two-year pilot for the girls volleyball finals to be at West Hills College-Lemoore beginning in 2015.
Golden Eagle Arena, which features stadium seating for 2,500, will host the section’s five divisional championships on Saturday, Nov. 20. The section previously held all of its volleyball finals at a single high school site during the 1980s before switching individual host schools.
Volleyball is following boys and girls basketball, which have been held at Selland Arena for 11 years, and baseball, which was held at Visalia’s Rawhide Ballpark last year, into a single-site venue. After a two-year run in Lemoore, the section will put the host site out to bid with the hope of rotating it yearly through the North, Central and South areas.
“We’re excited about it following the success we’ve had with Selland and Rawhide Ballpark,” Crichlow said. “Anytime we can put champiosnhips any place other than a high school facility, it’s good for kids.”
Never miss a local story.
Softball is also in the works to be held at a single site, with Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond, Bakersfield College and Visalia’s Miracle League field in the running for a potential 2017 launch.
