Buchanan High junior track and field star Hannah Waller continued to expand her game Saturday in the Central Valley Classic at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Already the second-leading 400-meter runner in the history of Central Section girls, she won the 200 in 24.24 — improving her state best for the season and No. 2 lifetime for her in the event. Her 24.11 in 2014 is No. 6 in section annals.
Only Clovis’ Jenna Prandini (23.75, 2011), Edison’s Jazmen Bunch (23.82, 2014), Clovis West’s Megan DelPino (23.94, 2008), Ridgeview’s Dominique Lauderdale (24.06) and Centennial’s Tiffaney Bennett (24.11, 2000) have run faster in the section 200.
Waller’s 54.04 in the 400 last season is second to Bakersfield’s Janice Nichols (53.89) in section history. Waller placed third and fourth in the past two CIF State Championships in the 400.
Never miss a local story.
Also Saturday, Waller teamed with Brenae Wellington, Brooke Watts and Amari Sperling to win the 400 relay in 47.68 — No. 5 in the state this season. Waller already has been part of a 1,600 relay this season that ranks No. 1 in the state at 3:50.77.
And section leaders Paramveer Chohan of Buchanan (39.37) and Kyle Lawson of Clovis (39.76) dueled again in the boys’ 300 intermediate hurdles.
• Gabby Satterlee, a Bee cross country All-Star after helping lead Central Valley Christian to the state D-IV title, clocked 2:12.62 in the 800 at the Exeter Monarch Invitational. The time was a school record, No. 12 all-time in the section, No. 8 all-time in the section for a junior and No. 1 in the state for the season.
Baseball: Mustangs start fast in PRO-PT
Tulare Western, ranked third in the section and continuing to make a statement in its promotion to D-I, received complete games at home from Kobe Portillo (six strikeouts) and Blake Costa (seven strikeouts) while defeating Golden Valley and Bakersfield by 5-0 scores to open the PRO-PT Visalia/Tulare Invitational.
Blaze Hickey and Hector Ruvalcaba combined for four hits and five runs for the Mustangs against Golden Valley. Then Hickey drove in two runs against Bakersfield.
Jordan Padilla had four hits and three steals on the day for Tulare Western, which is 13-5 a year after going 29-5 and winning the section’s D-II. The Mustangs continue the four-day, 19-team event Monday at home against West of Bakersfield at 4 p.m.
Softball: Buchanan 2-0 at Clovis Classic
Spencer Sampson tripled and scored on Sienna Swain’s single in the first and Molly Mallar pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts as third-ranked Buchanan closed a 2-0 opening day of the Clovis Easter Classic with a 1-0 win at home over No. 10 Taft.
In Buchanan and Taft, it matched teams that placed second and first last season in D-I and D-IV.
Earlier Saturday, Buchanan defeated Dinuba 12-1 in five innings as Spencer Sansom went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. She would add two hits against Taft as the Bears improved to 13-2.
Top-ranked Clovis, meanwhile, raised its record to 15-2 with Classic-opening routs of Memorial (22-1) and Mt. Whitney (15-0).
But the stunner of the day had Kingsburg win 4-3 in eight innings against Central, which arrived 21-2, No. 2 in the section and No. 19 in the state.
Shayla Daniels earned the win and Jessica Gonzalez and Hannah Van Vleet each drove in runs for the Vikings, up to D-II after placing second and first in D-III the past two seasons.
