The Clovis High softball team upset top-seeded Stockdale on Tuesday, winning 4-2 in Bakersfield to advance to the Central Section Division I championship.
No. 4 Clovis (24-6) will face No. 2 Central (21-7) for the section title after the Grizzlies toppled defending champ Buchanan 4-1 in the other semifinal.
The Cougars and Grizzlies were considered co-Tri-River Athletic Conference champions, though Central did win their two head-to-head matchups, 2-1 and 3-0.
3 Central will be aiming for its third Central Section title in coach Scott Gorton’s 10 seasons.
The Grizzlies are chasing after their third section title in coach Scott Gorton’s 10 seasons. Central last won the section title in 2013.
The Cougars, headed by longtime coach Mike Noel, will be seeking their ninth section title in school history and first since 2015.
Clovis lost to Buchanan in last year’s final, falling 2-0.
Clovis junior Danielle Lung shut down Stockdale on a five-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. Central senior Gianna Mancha, who sat out much of her junior year, pitched a five-hitter against Buchanan and was 3 for 4 with a double and a triple batting.
The softball championship will be held at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond. But the time and date remains to be determined with the section working to accommodate Clovis fans should the Cougars baseball team also reach this weekend’s section championship, which will be held in Visalia.
