The individual championship of the Central Section boys golf tournament turned into a thriller. The team titles were milestones.
Buchanan High’s Tyler Ashman emerged as the winner of a three-way playoff with 2016 Bee Player of the Year Lane Pulliam of Hanford and Central Valley Christian’s Brian Stark after each shot 1-under 71 in regulation Monday at River Island Country Club.
Fresno Christian’s Michael Cliff (the champ of this year’s Len Ross-Fresno City Junior Amateur) shot a 72 as did Buchanan’s Ian Oehshlaeger.
As for the team champs?
Never miss a local story.
Buchanan, in Division I, won its first championship since 2002. The Bears along with runner-up Clovis West and the top 12 individuals advance to the CIF Southern California Regionals on May 25 at Brookside Golf Club next to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
The Bears totaled 372 strokes to the Golden Eagles’ 378 with defending champion Clovis North third at 388.
“It’s great; The kids played great,” Buchanan coach Greg Funk told The Bakersfield Californian. “The best thing about them you wouldn’t know if they came in fifth place or first.”
Hanford was the D-II champ – the first section title in the sport in school history. The Bullpups shot a combined 424, with Bakersfield Christian second at 436.
