OUTSTANDING FIELD EVENTS ATHLETE: JOEY SOUZA
•Leaping to prominence:
He placed second in the state long jump (24-2¾), and his season-best 24-10 is a school record, No. 7 all-time in the Central Section and No. 4 nationally for the season, trailing three seniors. His wind-aided 25-7 was No. 2 nationally this season for all conditions. He scored a section Masters meet third-best 19½ points by winning the long jump (23-9), placing second in the 100 (school-record 10.72) and third in the 400 relay (42.38).
•A cut above:
Souza had flowing locks before cutting his hair after his freshman season. "He almost looked like a skater kid when he first came out," Vikings coach Cole Sprague says. "We started hearing about him in seventh grade and it seemed like it took forever for him to finally get here. We knew we were in for something special, and he made an immediate splash. He has really started to garner respect around the state. It's, 'This guy's a contender,' not, 'This guy doesn't belong.' The kid in the green jersey is making fans 'ooh' pretty quick."
