COACH OF THE YEAR: DANNY ALBERTY
Never miss a local story.
•More about winning:
This recognition for Alberty is far more than about delivering his fourth Central Section boys team title in 11 years with the Tigers, more than about that group tying for fourth in the state, and, in addition, more than about his girls finishing third as a team in the section after advancing four members to major colleges from a team that placed second in the section in 2013. This is about how Alberty responded professionally in crisis, when his boys 400-meter relay team won the race to begin track events at the CIF State Track and Field Championships -- the second section gold in the event's 96-year history -- only to be disqualified because one of the Tigers was judged to have stepped out of his lane by a few inches on a couple strides.
"I could have lost it, but I had to go to 15 (boys and girls state participant) kids, one by one, to comfort them. We had to move on." -- Alberty.
•The end result:
Edison won four state medals -- Kevin Nutt's third (200) and fifth (100), Jazmen Bunch's sixth (200) and the girls' third-place 400 relay, which was run moments before the boys' DQ.
"I'll never get over it. I mean, it was hard. I've played back that race in my head how many times? As a coach, I've asked, 'What could I have done differently?' And, at the end of the day, it's nothing. We took every precaution. It hurts." -- Alberty.
