Fresno Grizzlies outfielder Dave Roberts kicked back by his new swimming pool with his children and wife at his San Diego home during the All-Star break.

Roberts, a 15-year pro, said most players like to relax during the three-day respite.

"During the season you're pumped so much your mind is focused on each game, so the break allows you to get away and just focus entirely on family and that's good," he said. "It's valuable. ... We do so much traveling during the season anyway that the last thing you want to do is travel."

Still, some took trips home or to other destinations before returning for Friday night's 11-4 loss to Salt Lake.

Travis Ishikawa relaxed in Seattle with his wife and seven-year old son.

Manager Dan Rohn used the days off with his wife in Monterey, "Sitting on the 18th green at Pebble Beach, watching a deer walk across, watching people play up, having a drink," he said. "It was pretty nice."

A couple of players went to Yosemite National Park.

Grizzlies pitcher Geno Espineli went to the Triple-A All-Star Game in Louisville. But he too made sure to spend time with family -- a major theme for the rare off-time. Espineli's girlfriend and mother were by his side and though he was technically working -- he pitched an inning, striking out three -- he said it felt like vacation because he was with family.

The highlights baseball-wise were the packed stadium -- which he said was nicer than any Pacific Coast League park -- and racking up the strikeouts.

"I'm not a strikeouts pitcher. I'm in there mostly because I throw sidearm," Espineli said.

"The [radar] gun was juiced four or five miles an hour, so [my friends watching on television] were asking me when did I start taking things," he added with a chuckle. "I was like, 'No, no, no. I was maybe a little pumped up for the game but other than that it was nothing.' "

Espineli will get to spend a little more time with his family in August because he was chosen for the U.S. Olympic baseball team. His mother and two sisters will accompany him and friends are trying to lock down $2,000 plane tickets to make the trip as well.
