Fresno State will play Texas A&M in 2020 and Arizona State in 2023 as part of future football dates announced Thursday by athletic director Jim Bartko.
Both are single-game contracts, with the Bulldogs scheduled to play Sept. 26, 2020, at Texas A&M and Sept. 16, 2023, at Arizona State.
They reflect our scheduling philosophy to create opportunities to produce necessary income and bring long-term consistency in our scheduling model.
Fresno State athletic director Jim Bartko on beefing up future football schedules with the addition of games vs. Texas A&M and Arizona State
“These games offer Fresno State the continued opportunity to showcase Bulldog football across the country against elite competition,” Bartko said. “They reflect our scheduling philosophy to create opportunities to produce necessary income and bring long-term consistency in our scheduling model.”
Big-time nonconference games are key to balancing the athletic department budget. The Bulldogs averaged more than $1 million in guarantees from nonconference games from 2011 to 2014 and more than $900,000 across six seasons, but in 2015 – with games at Mississippi and Brigham Young – Fresno State was $10,000 in the hole.
This coming season, playing at Nebraska and Toledo, the Bulldogs will make a little more than $400,000.
“We need to net $1 million a year, and this year we’re at zero,” Bartko told The Bee last June. “You go from $1.2 million last year to zero this year – and when I say zero that means what we’re getting paid to go to Ole Miss and BYU is the same amount we’re paying Abilene Christian and Utah to come here.”
Fresno State and Texas A&M met once previously at Kyle Field. Future NFL quarterback Tom Brandstater found tight end Bear Pascoe for seven receptions for 70 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and linebackers Ben Jacobs and Marcus Riley combined for 19 total tackles, but the 23rd-ranked Aggies rallied for a 47-45 triple overtime victory Sept. 8, 2007 – the only triple overtime game in school history.
The Bulldogs have faced Arizona State three times, though the latest and previous games will wind up 82 years apart. The Sun Devils hold a 3-0 advantage in the series, winning 7-0 at Fresno State in 1931, 21-7 at Tempe in 1933 and 26-7 at Fresno State in 1941.
