There were no additions to the Fresno State roster on Sunday, which means the open tryout to find a kicker among the full-time students on campus didn't yield the hoped for results.
It did not go well.
Fresno State had 23 applicants, and none made it through the kicking portion of the tryouts. "I think the longest field goal that was made was like 18 yards," Coach Tim DeRuyter said.
The Bulldogs were looking for depth behind freshman Kody Kroening more than anything -- he is the only placekicker in the program since Colin McGuire withdrew from school to return home to Texas to deal with some personal issues, and Garrett Swanson is the only punter.
Never miss a local story.
Now, they just have to stay heathy.
"That was our concern, not so much that somebody was going to beat Kody out as much as just to have a backup," DeRuyter said. "Practice leg-wise, we have machines so if he starts to get tired that way we have other alternatives and (freshman tight end) Chad Olsen punts, so we have alternatives. It's just the place kicker, if Kody were to get hurt."
Free safety Shannon Edwards has been cleared after sitting out last week because of a shoulder injury and was in practice on Sunday night, which means the Bulldogs, who have very liberally sprinkled the word 'or' throughout their weekly depth chart, could reach a new high this week.
DeRuyter and defensive coordinator Nick Toth have this season had two starters at nose guard and defensive end depending on where Tyeler Davison lines up to start the game as well as the cornerback spots and strong safety depending on where Charles Washington starts.
With Edwards back, the Bulldogs could have an 'or' at every spot in the secondary when it releases its depth chart on Monday for a Mountain West Conference game against San Diego State.
"You got it," DeRuyter joked.
If Edwards moves back into a starting role, he moves Derron Smith to strong safety from free safety. Edwards plays only as a free safety in the Bulldogs' defense.
Washington again could start at strong safety or cornerback. And the cornerback positions have been fluid since the start of the season - last week freshman Malcom Washington made the first start of his career and Jamal Ellis made his first start of the season, and Curtis Riley, Stratton Brown and Bryan Harper also are in the competition through the week.
