The thought of playing for Fresno State had been on Tulare High wide receiver Emoryie Edwards’ mind for awhile.
When he made his verbal commitment to the Bulldogs for the 2018 recruiting class this week, his parents were understandably excited for their son’s decision.
Who could blame them? It’s just a 44-minute trip to Bulldog Stadium.
Never miss a local story.
“My mom was real emotional and crying,” Edwards said. “My dad was more hyped and excited and talking about coming to the games and everything else. It’s real convenient for my family to attend games – that’s not too far of a drive.”
The three-star recruit by Scout said the coaching staff “showed him a lot of love.
“They cared for me and care for my future and my family,” Edwards said.
Verbal commitments are nonbinding. Edwards can make it official on National Signing Day, which this year includes an early period for football beginning Dec. 20 and the regular period beginning Feb. 7.
Edwards, listed at 6 feet and 180 pounds, had 94 receptions for 1,571 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2016. For his career, Edwards has 2,900 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Edwards said he held offers from Air Force, Arizona, Brigham Young, Duke, Eastern Washington, Oregon State and Utah State but that he is “100 percent” committed to Fresno State.
“I heard a lot about Coach (Jeff) Tedford who was at Cal for so many years and put so many people in the NFL,” Edwards said. “They mainly talked about his character like he was an amazing guy. He’s real down-to-earth, real helpful and caring. He told me a few stories about himself and he just felt comfortable with me and I felt comfortable around him.”
