Jerry Tarkanian and Bee reporter George Hostetter met twice in 2007 to talk about his obituary. The result was a two-hour taped interview. (Warning: Contains some coarse language.)
Tarkanian was five years removed from his final coaching stint, at Fresno State. He was dividing time between Fresno, where he conducted a weekly radio show, San Diego and Las Vegas.
Never miss a local story.
Tarkanian died Wednesday at a Las Vegas hospital. He was 84.
Harry Gaykian, a longtime friend of Tarkanian, arranged the first interview on June 13, 2007. The second interview was a week later.
Tarkanian asked a question before the interview started: "This isn't going into the paper until I die?"
"That's right," Hostetter replied.
Tarkanian smiled. He said nothing for a few seconds.
Then: "Let's go."
