Fresno State’s softball team will put its perfect home record on the line when it welcomes Weber State, Cal State Bakersfield, San Diego State and Washington – the latter for a matchup of Top 25 teams – for the school’s namesake tournament.
The Bulldogs (14-5-1), ranked No. 22 by ESPN.com/USA Softball and No. 24 in the USA Today/NFCA coaches poll, are 5-0 at Margie Wright Diamond and face Weber State (11-7) at 5 p.m. and No. 7/8 Washington (16-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday’s opening day of the Fresno State Classic.
Saturday, the Bulldogs repeat those matchups at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., then close the tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday against Cal State Bakersfield (4-11).
The tournament opens at 9:30 a.m. Friday when San Diego State (12-7) faces Cal State Bakersfield.
Fresno State is 2-3-1 against ranked opponents this season, the last win coming during the season-opening Kajigawa Classic in Arizona, where it beat now No. 19/16 Tennessee (7-3) and then No. 23 Utah (2-0). The Bulldogs lost to No. 14/13 Oklahoma (3-2), were run-ruled by No. 8/7 Oregon (9-0) and most recently tied Oregon State, ranked 24th in the latest USA Softball poll, at last weekend’s Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton.
The Bulldogs are led by senior third baseman Alyssa Villalpando, who is hitting .333 and slugging .583. Freshman Dominique Jackson leads Fresno State with six home runs and a .685 slugging percentage.
Senior ace Jill Compton (8-3) has a 1.79 ERA.
All 12 tournament games will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
Baseball – Fresno State looks to rebound after a pair of one-run losses following a season-opening 11-game winnning streak.
But it won’t be easy for the Bulldogs, who meet consensus top-five Texas A&M for three games in College Station. Game 1 is 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The Aggies (12-1), who have won seven in a row since losing at Pepperdine on Feb. 26, are ranked second by Baseball America and are third in the National College Baseball Writers’ Association and D1Baseball.com polls.
The Bulldogs (11-2) are led by Jimmy Lambert and Brody Russell, named Mountain West pitcher and player of the week Tuesday.
Probable starters for the teams are a combined 13-0 with ERAs all below 2.50.
All three games will be on SEC Network Plus.
Lacrosse – Fresno State plays two in Eugene, Ore., facing George Mason (1-1) at 4 p.m. Friday and Mountain Pacific Sports foe Oregon (4-2, 0-0) at 11 a.m. Sunday.
