Fresno State was limited to one hit over the final five innings as Long Beach State rallied for a 4-3 victory Monday, dealing the Bulldogs a second straight defeat.
The Bulldogs, who saw an 11-0 start spoiled with a 5-4 loss Sunday in a Mountain West Conference series finale at San Diego State, took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth only to see Long Beach State chip away.
Kevin Viers’ RBI single got the Bulldogs on the board in the first, Nick Warren made it 2-0 with an infield single in the third and Zachariah Ashford tripled home another in the fourth.
Long Beach State (8-4) countered with single runs in the fourth through seventh innings, with the tying run coming on an error by freshman second baseman Jeremiah Burks and the go-ahead score on Zack Domingues' base hit.
Domingues finished 4 for 4 for the Dirtbags. At .409, he had been one of Long Beach State's few solid hitters for a team that entered hitting .238 and managed only eight hits off Fresno State starter Edgar Gonzalez (4 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 6Ks, 2 BB) and three relievers.
Mark Reece (0-1) allowed two runs (one unearned) on four hits in 1 1-3 innings.
Long Beach State junior right-hander Dave Smith gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out eight in six innings. Ty Provencher (1-0), Joshua Advocate and Chris Rivera followed with three innings of hitless relief.
