Fresno State’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir Fresno State fired a 4-under 68 to earn a share of second and was among three Bulldogs in the top 10 as they helped lift their team into the overall lead after Monday’s opening round of the Fresno State Classic at San Joaquin Country Club.
The Bulldogs totaled 286 strokes, a 2-under total that was seven shots better than Boise State. Santa Clara (295), New Mexico State (298) and Georgetown (299) rounded out the top five.
Santa Clara’s Annie Freman was the individual leader after a 67. Fresno State’s Kristin Simonsen (71) was in a three-way tie for fourth, while Hannah Sodersten (72) earned a share of sixth headed into what will be Tuesday’s second and final round.
The tournament’s start was pushed back to noon Monday and limited to one round on the opening day because of inclement weather and will be shortened from 54 holes to 36.

Diving – Bulldogs junior Shelbie Holden finished a nonqualifying 55th in the 1-meter preliminaries as the NCAA Zone E Championships opened at the Northern Arizona University Aquatic and Tennis Complex in Flagstaff. The event, a feeder into the NCAA Championships on March 17-19, continues with the 3-meter prelims and finals Tuesday and concludes with the platform Wednesday.
Lacrosse – Sarah Bloise and Nicole Ortlieb each scored a pair of goals as Fresno State beat Furman 7-4 in a nonconference match at Bulldog Stadium. Ortlieb's first goal of the game and 14th of the season made it 3-2 with 28 minutes left in the second half. The Bulldogs, who broke loose from a 2-2 halftime tie, improved to 3-3. Furman fell to 3-3.
