Fresno State rolled to a 9-2 win over San Jose State on Saturday night behind two unexpected heroes.
Freshman pitchers Anthony Arias and Ricky Thomas tag-teamed to hold the Spartans to four hits as the Bulldogs clinched their second Mountain West Conference baseball series victory of the season in front of 1,612 fans at Beiden Field.
“I really liked the way our young guys pitched,” head coach Mike Batesole said. “Those two freshmen are the future of our program. They have the chance to be real Friday night guys someday.”
Arias started and struck out seven in 41/3 innings. Thomas strung together 12 straight outs before giving up a hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Thomas, who hadn’t made an appearance in nearly a month last pitching Feb. 24 in a 3-2 10-inning loss against USC, got the win in 4 2/3. He finished the game allowing just one hit to go with six strikeouts.
Fresno State’s offense erupted in the fourth, fueled by a pair of errors by San Jose State. The Bulldogs pieced together five hits, including back-to-back homers from Kevin Viers and Brody Russell, in a seven-run onslaught.
Viers roped a two-run shot to right center for his second home run in as many games. The junior first baseman finished 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Shortstop Ryan Dobson hit 2 for 2 with a triple and a run scored.
• Ex-locals Eric Anderson (Sanger High) and Jonathan Hernandez (Hoover High) each made relief appearances for the Spartans. Anderson walked three and struck out one in threw 11/3 innings. Hernandez pitched the final 12/3 for San Jose State, giving up one hit to go with one strikeout.
The Bulldogs will go for the sweep at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
