•Bulldogs great to be honored:
Former Bulldogs pitcher Wende Ward (Lourenco) will have a banner raised in her honor before Fresno State’s 6 p.m. game Friday. Ward was the second female athlete and sixth Fresno State student-athlete overall to have a jersey number (19) retired in 1987. Ward, who played at Fresno State from 1980-83, was a second-team All-American in 1982 and remains in the top 10 in 11 career pitching categories.

The Bulldogs (4-1), who were picked to win the Mountain West, have gotten off to a strong start, recording two wins via the mercy rule. Their lone defeat was 4-0 to Ole Miss. Senior outfielder Michelle Solomon has two home runs. Outfielder Brenna Moss is hitting .313 with four steals in five tries. Jill Compton (3-1, 2.26 ERA) has 28 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.
The Bears (4-0), predicted to finish seventh in the nine-team Pac-12, are holding teams to a .218 average.
The Broncos (1-5) were picked last in the six-team West Coast Conference and enter the tournament on a five-game slide.
The Aggies (1-4), selected second-to-last in the Big West, have lost three times via the mercy rule.
The Highlanders (3-2), projected last in the Big West, have won three straight. Chelsea Ponce (3-1, 0.61) is holding batters to a .130 average.
