Alex Furr had no reason to panic, not with her team in the lead and with the ball in their hands.
The Fresno State senior guard, her team up just three in the closing minute, drained the shot clock while dribbling around the perimeter before pulling up for and making a 25-foot jumper with 25 seconds to play that secured an eventual 70-64 win over Utah State in a Mountain West Conference game in Logan, Utah.
A seventh straight win pushed the Bulldogs to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Furr and Alex Sheedy, combined for 25 second-half points in handing the Aggies (3-12, 0-3) their sixth straight defeat.
Fresno State led by 11 with 8:05 to go, but Utah State charged back with the help of perfect free-throw shooting (14 for 14 on the night).
The Aggies pulled within one at 63-62 on Franny Vaalu’s jumper with 1 minute, 19 seconds to play.
Fresno State’s Shauqunna Collins was fouled on the ensuing inbound and, with the Bulldogs in the double bonus, made both of her free throws before Furr’s deep triple — after a missed 3-pointer by Utah State — put a dagger in the Aggies.
Four players scored in double figures for Fresno State, with Furr and Sheedy leading the way with 17 points apiece. Collins and Raven Fox scored 10 each.
The Bulldogs couldn’t match the Aggies in free-throw accuracy but made up for it in volume, going 16 for 23. Fresno State hit 44% from the field compared to the Aggies’ 41%.
Freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu had 19 points (7 of 7 on free throws) to lead Utah State.
