Fresno State junior catcher Taylor Ward was named Friday to Louisville Slugger’s preseason All-America second team.
As a sophomore, Ward was an All-Mountain West second-teamer and one of three Bulldogs to start all 57 games — 38 at catcher and 19 as the designated hitter. He hit .320, with 29 runs, eight doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs.
Ward prepped at Shadow Hills High in Indio.
Four players in all from the Mountain West were named to the All-America team, including corner infielder Austin Byler and outfielder Kewby Meyer, both seniors at Nevada, and junior third baseman Tyler France of San Diego State. All earned third-team honors.
Closer Riley Ferrell of Texas Christian is projected as the Player of The Year. He struck out 70 batters in 45.1 innings last season while saving 15 games with a 0.79 ERA.
The selections were made by Collegiate Baseball.
Fresno State opens Feb. 13 with a three-game home series against UC Irvine.
