The San Diego State baseball team came from behind twice Sunday to beat New Mexico 6-4 for its third straight Mountain West Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Aztecs (40-21) and Lobos each collected 13 hits and exchanged a pair of leads into the sixth inning before the defending champs went up for good on Danny Sheehan’s two-out RBI double in the bottom of the inning. Sheehan finished 2 for 4, driving home an insurance run in the eighth on a single to right center.
San Diego State catcher Seby Zavala was named Tournament MVP, going 2-for-3 in the final with one RBI and a run scored.
New Mexico (32-27) catcher Jack Zoellner led his team, hitting 2 for 3 and batting in all three of the Lobos’ earned runs.
Fresno State junior catcher Taylor Ward was the only Bulldog to be named All-Tournament.
The 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced 9 a.m. Monday on ESPNU.
