Anastasia Petukhova's underdog run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships came to an end as the Fresno State senior fell Friday to seventh-seeded Denise Dy of Washington 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Petukhova, who got in as a wild-card and then opened by knocking off No. 1 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over USC's Maria Sanchez earlier in the day in New Haven, Conn.Dy is ranked 58th in the country but a recent surge, including a title at the ITA Northwest Regional, had earned her the No. 7 seed for the Indoor."Anastasia started really well, but Dy came back really strong," Fresno State coach Simon Thibodeau said. "[Dy] is one of the hottest players right now on the circuit."The victory over the No. 17 Sanchez was Petukhova's fifth over a ranked opponent.The Bulldogs' fall campaign is complete. They will next be in action on Jan. 15 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs.
