Anastasia Petukhova's underdog run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships came to an end as the Fresno State senior fell Friday to seventh-seeded Denise Dy of Washington 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Petukhova, who got in as a wild-card and then opened by knocking off No. 1 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over USC's Maria Sanchez earlier in the day in New Haven, Conn.
Dy is ranked 58th in the country but a recent surge, including a title at the ITA Northwest Regional, had earned her the No. 7 seed for the Indoor.
"Anastasia started really well, but Dy came back really strong," Fresno State coach Simon Thibodeau said. "[Dy] is one of the hottest players right now on the circuit."
The victory over the No. 17 Sanchez was Petukhova's fifth over a ranked opponent.
The Bulldogs' fall campaign is complete. They will next be in action on Jan. 15 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs.
Fresno Pacific's team of Vanessa Heroux and Katia Sabate dropped their quarterfinals match, falling 8-2 to Miami's Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu.
