Five Fresno State football players were named Thursday to an academic all-district team, giving the Bulldogs more honorees than any other team in the country.
Senior safety Moses Harris, senior punter Robert Malone, junior tight end Vince Pascoe, junior offensive guard Andrew Jackson and sophomore kicker Kevin Goessling all made the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 team. Harris last week was named one of 16 finalists for the Campbell Trophy, given to the nation's top senior scholar-athletes in football.
District 8 covers schools in the west. Brigham Young and Washington State each placed three players on the all-district team; Stanford and Cal had two apiece. No players from USC or UCLA made the list.
Penn State put four players on the District 4 list, the next-best total nationwide.
All-district players go on the national ballot to be considered for the Academic All-America team.
The Academic All-America program is run by the College Sports Information Directors of America, a group founded in 1957.
Student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
