Junior Erick Garcia posted a runner-up finish for the second straight year at the Western Athletic Conference cross-country championships and Fresno State took second as a team, too, Saturday in Reno, Nev.
Garcia, formerly of Parlier High, fell just short in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 26:04.4. Utah State's Brian McKenna ran 26 minutes for the win.
Utah State, with six runners in the top 12, captured the team title with 25 points. Fresno State scored 67 and Boise State 69 among the seven teams.
The Bulldogs' second-place finish is their best showing at a conference championship since 1991 when they were runners-up in the Big West.
Paul Zwama placed 10th for the Bulldogs in 26:45.8. Teammate Danny Vartanian was 13th in 26:52.8, Frank Sanders 15th in 27:08.6, Eric Battles 29th in 28:04.1 and Carson Keller 31st in 28:07.1.
In the women's race, Roxanne Sellick placed eighth in the 5-kilometer (19:44.8) event to pace Fresno State to fifth among the nine teams. Marissa McPhail was 15th (20:12.2) and Jennifer Hernandez 22nd (20:30.2).
New Mexico State won the championship with 29 points, as Courtney Shultz (9:11.4) and Camille Schultz (19:12.4) finished 1-2 out of 73 runners. Utah State was second with 41 and the Bulldogs had 135.
