Defending champion Rikus de Villiers won in straight sets, leading Fresno State's strong performance to open the Bulldog Classic tennis tournament Friday at the Wathen Center.

The Bulldogs captured 11 of 12 matches in singles and doubles. The three-day tournament continues today at 9 a.m.

De Villiers handled UC Santa Barbara's Taylor Chavez-Goggin 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Tejesvi Veerepalli, David Ayoun and Remi Bloutillier won their Flight A matches.

In Flight B, Fresno State freshman Hugo Verdi made his debut with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nevada's Kristian Kuharszky. Taylor Leiby won both of his matches.

The doubles teams of De Vil-liers/Boutillier and Leiby/Siddharth Alapati both won to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Fresno State's women's team of freshmen were bounced into the singles consolation round on the first day of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley.

Bianca Modoc won her opening match, but lost in the second round. Anna Mikhaylova and Olga Kirpicheva won their second matches.

In doubles, Modoc/Mikhaylova advanced with an 8-0 victory over a duo from Arizona State.

Bulldogs runners place 8th

Senior Roxanne Sellick finished fifth to help the Fresno State women's cross country team finish eighth at the Notre Dame Invitational in cold, wet South Bend, Ind.

Sellick ran the 5K course in 17 minutes, 54 seconds -- 23 seconds behind the winner.

Junior Erick Garcia finished 70th for the Bulldogs men, who wound up 22nd among 23 teams.

'Dogs scholars honored

Four Fresno State softball players were named 2008-09 scholar athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

It is the second honor for Haley Perkins and Lindsay Milchovich, and the first for Mallory Perkins and Kaylan Pollard. Each had to maintain at least a 3.30 grade-point average.
