Utah State fans know Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling well -- he drilled the 58-yard field goal that gave the Bulldogs the 30-28 win last year in Logan, Utah.
Goessling took the ball for a ride again Saturday, connecting on a 50-yard field goal, the second longest of his career. He has now hit 10 field goals in a row and 17 of his last 19. He is 10 of 11 on the season. His only miss was his first attempt of the season, which was against Wisconsin. "What a difference a year makes, huh," Fresno State coach Pat Hill said.
"Thank God he was tough enough to fight through all the things he had to fight through last year."
Goessling, a redshirt sophomore, had a tough season last year because he missed key kicks against Hawaii and Wisconsin, opponents to which the Bulldogs lost. That seems to be behind him now. Way behind him. "Right now he's pretty automatic," Hill said. "That guy is nails."
*Ryan Mathews moved into third place on the Bulldogs career rushing list Saturday, passing Dwayne Wright.
Mathews tallied 185 yards Saturday and now has 2,788 career yards. Wright had 2,683. Next on the list are Michael Pittman (3,017) and Ron Rivers (3,473).
Mathews is still second on the career rushing touchdowns list with 31. Anthony Daigle owns that record with 35.
*Quarterback Ryan Colburn had his second best game of the season, completing 17 of 27 passes for 256 yards. His season best was 289 yards against Wisconsin.
