Seniors Swanson, Nord named Sunbird of Year
Fresno Pacific seniors Kendall Swanson and Dallas Nord were each named Sunbird of the Year, the department’s annual honor given to athletes with high GPAs, sport excellence, Christian values and leadership.
Swanson (women’s swimming) finished the year with the top breastroke time in the nation at the Division II level in the 100 and 200. She went undefeated the past two years in the 100 breaststroke against D-II competition.
Nord (men’s cross country/track and field) had the highest total GPA of any student-athlete (3.98) and graduates as the second fastest runner in school history in the 1,500.
Kathleen Anderson (volleyball) and Wilson Ashford (baseball) were named Senior of the Year, Samantha Clark (women’s water polo) and junior Alex Hussain (men’s swimming) earned Scholar of the Year and Connor Nolen (men’s cross country and track & field) received the Freshman of the Year award.
Bulldogs’ Ly a four-time all-conference golfer
Fresno State’s Madchen Ly was named to the All-Mountain West women’s golf first team, making the senior out of Clovis High a four-time all-conference selection.
Ly — who placed in the top 10 at eight tournaments this season, including a victory at the Fresno State Classic — earlier this week earned the No. 1 individual seed for the NCAA Regional that starts May 7 in South Bend, Ind.
Ly was a second-team All-MW pick as a sophomore and junior, after starting her career as the WAC Freshman of the Year and first-team pick.
Sunbirds drop pair
Fresno Pacific couldn’t hang protect leads and dropped a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Azusa Pacific, falling 11-4 and 6-5.
The Sunbirds (32-17) gave up 10 runs in the final three innings in the opener after Steven Lozier gave them an early lead with a two-run home run. Michael Tuttle added two solo homers.
Fresno Pacific led 5-4 after six in the nightcap but surrendered solo runs in the seventh and eighth.
