Ashford named PacWest pitcher of week; Sunbirds at No. 5 in D-II West
Fresno Pacific’s Wilson Ashford was named PacWest Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season Monday after outdueling Azusa Pacific ace and MLB draft prospect Josh Staumont.
Ashford last Thursday pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Cougars, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 12 batters in a 10-2 Sunbirds victory. The sophomore left-hander out of Clovis North is 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA and 33 strikeouts — 13 strikeouts away from tying Matt Mazzoni for the program record.
After taking three of four against Azusa Pacific, the Sunbirds (15-8) climbed two spots to No. 5 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association NCAA Division II West Region poll.

The Sunbirds take a break from PacWest play this weekend to host a nonconference series with Cal State East Bay beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
’Dogs face Trojans at Dedeaux today
Two weeks after losing to USC in extra innings, the Fresno State baseball team looks to climb back to .500 with a nonconference game against the Trojans at Dedeaux field at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (10-11), coming off a 2-1 series loss to UC Davis at Beiden Field, face a USC team that improved to 17-3 overall this weekend by taking two of three at home against Washington State in both Pac-12 teams’ conference-opening series. Trojans third baseman Blake Lacey (Clovis High) went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in Sunday’s 11-0 victory.
Along with the 3-2 loss to USC on Feb. 24, Fresno State is 0-5 against Pac-12 teams, also getting swept in a four-game series at Oregon State earlier this month. The Bulldogs have lost two in a row overall and six of their past 10 games. At 3-3 in conference play, they return to Mountain West play this weekend against San Jose State starting Friday at Beiden Field.
