Nate Navarette scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error in the bottom of the fourth and Fresno City completed a three-game Central Valley Conference sweep of West Hills with a 7-3 victory Friday at John Euless Ballpark.
Christian Funk’s RBI double highlighted a three-run seventh for the Rams (11-2, 6-0). Justin Heskett improved to 3-1; the Falcons are 3-12 and 0-6.
No. 6 Sunbirds drop pair in Hawaii
Fresno Pacific right-hander Jake Martinez gave up six runs — all earned — as the NCAA Division II sixth-ranked Sunbirds fell 10-2 to host Hawaii Pacific in the opener of a PacWest doubleheader in Waipahu, Hawaii.
Game 2, completed early Saturday PST, saw the Sharks complete the sweep with an 11-13 victory in the baseball program's first trip to the Hawaiian islands and the PacWest Conference opener for both teams.
The Sunbirds (9-4) fell behind early in both games and were missing two of their top hitters, Baron Bower and Michael Hostetler, because of injury.
Fresno Pacific batters struck out 25 times on the day, including 10 in the opener against Hawaii Pacific ace Rico Garcia (2-0). Garcia also walked six.
Nolan Barraza went 5 for 9 with six RBIs over the two games for the Sharks (5-2).
Nick Stoll and Preston Scott collected two hits apiece in game 1 for the Sunbirds, who were down 5-0 before scoring in the sixth.
John Koretoff added two hits and an RBI double for Fresno Pacific in game 2, which saw the Sunbirds again fall behind 5-0, and Nick Pate had two hits with an RBI triple. Wilson Ashford (2-1) allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked two.
The teams play another doubleheader Saturday beginning at 6 pm PST.
Fresno Pacific wins 2 at water polo tourney
The Fresno Pacific women’s water polo team defeated Siena 13-5 and host Cal Lutheran 10-4 at the Tina Finali Invitational in Thousand Oaks.
Kelsie Harvey had 10 saves and an assist and Emily Marr a hat trick against NCAA Division I Siena. In the match against Cal Lutheran, the Sunbirds (4-8) went on a 4-0 run across the second and third periods. Nia Apodaca’s hat trick and two assists led the offense.
Monsters clinch top WSHL playoff seed
As the Fresno Monsters wrap up their Western States Hockey League regular-season schedule, check off another box on their things to do list.
Mike Nolan’s hat trick led the Monsters to an 11-0 victory Thursday over the Las Vegas Storm that clinched the No. 1 playoff seed out of the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League.
Fresno, with a Jacob Haynes’ hat trick powering a 7-3 victory over the Storm on Friday at Gateway Ice Center, is 37-7 heading into Saturday’s series and season finale at 5:30 p.m.
Opening home games of the playoffs will be March 13-15.
