Ex-Fresno State star Nick Watney and Buchanan High alum charged further up the leaderboard Saturday at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, moving among the top five through three rounds on the Monterey Peninsula.
Watney fired a 65 and Chappell a 66, both on the Pebble Beach course, to move to minus-16 and minus-14, respectively, with Jim Furyk the new leader at 18 under after his 63 on the same course.
Co-first-round leaders Matt Jones and Brandt Snedeker are tied for second, one back of Furyk.
Watney had eight birdies and one bogey in his round. After a run of four straight pars, he finished with a birdie on the 543-yard par-5 18th.
Never miss a local story.
Chappell started with a rush — an eagle on the 502-yard par-5 second that was capped by a 21-foot putt.
