Six college standouts with central San Joaquin Valley ties will be headed to the NFL Combine this month in Indianapolis.
Fresno State wide receiver Josh Harper, safety Derron Smith and defensive tackle Tyeler Davison are among those who have earned an invitation to the pre-draft series of drills and inteviews, set for Feb. 17-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in in Indianapolis.
Butkus Award and Lott Trophy winner Eric Kendricks — a UCLA linebacker and former Hoover High star — safety Tevin McDonald (Edison) of Eastern Washington and ex-College of the Sequoias cornerback Steven Nelson of Oregon State also have invitations.
Although there were 323 prospects invited, there were the usual array of notable omissions. Of local interest, that group included ex-Washington High star Deontay Greenberry, who is giving up his final year of eligibility at the University of Houston.
Greenberry, a 6-3, 200-pound wide receiver, closed with a rush, turning in one of the more memorable individual performances of the bowl season with two touchdown catches and a 2-point conversion as Houston came from behind to beat Pitt in the Armed Forces Bowl.
The NFL Draft is April 30-May 2 in Chicago.
