Bryson DeChambeau, a Southern Methodist junior from Clovis East, tied for third as the best international performance in the Australian Master of the Amateurs at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
DeChambeau, one of five USA representatives among a field of 78, rallied from an opening-round 2-over 74 with a 70-66-70 to finish at 8-under 280. He tied Australia’s Ben Eccles and trailed Australia’s Zach Murray (276) and Cory Crawford (278).
There were 44 Aussies in all competing in their country’s top top amateur tournament and arguably the finest in the world as well.
DeChambeau, 21, represented USA in the World Amateur Team Championships in the summer. Then, in October, he won the Erin Hills Intercollegiate tournament at Erin, Wis., for his second title at SMU, where he made second team All-America as a sophomore.\
