Khayri Washington scored with 12.3 seconds remaining to force overtime Wednesday and West Hills College held on for an 80-77 victory over Reedley on opening night of the Central Valley Conference men’s basketball season.
Washington finished with 17 points and Raul McIlwain led the Falcons (7-11) with 18.
Walter Orr hit four 3-pointers en route to 31 points to pace the Tigers (4-11). Orr added five assists and three steals.
State third-ranked Fresno City (16-3) had a bye, with its CVC opener set for Saturday at Sequoias.
• Chris Smith had 17 points and seven rebounds as COS (7-10) lost 53-50 to Columbia (10-6).
Fresno City women cruise to hoops victory
State 15th-ranked Fresno City College built a 19-6 lead in the first 10 minutes and rolled to a 90-43 victory over Merced in a women’s Central Valley Conference opener.
Heaven Lee led the way for the Rams (13-6) with a game-high 15 points. Jordan Whitfield scored 10 points for Fresno City.
Tekerra Borden and Nitoyra Bone each had 11 points apiece for the Blue Devils (2-12).
• Vanessa Mancera finished with a game-high 16 points and Corissa Turley had 15 points as No. 2 College of the Sequoias rolled to a 71-48 victory over Reedley.
Jacqueline Robles had 15 points for the Tigers (8-9, 0-1). The Giants improved to (16-3, 1-0)..
Aleman fighter Castro advances at Jr. Open
Aleman Boxing Fresno’s Marc Castro won his second straight bout at the 2015 Junior Open and Youth Nationals in Reno, moving him to within two victories of the gold.
The third-seeded Castro on Wednesday defeated No. 11 Tyler Morales of Oregon, dropping him in the first round on his way to a 3-0 decision at 119 pounds. On Tuesday, Castro defeated Damian Rainbow of Nevada 3-0.
Next up in the semifinals is No. 10 Emmanuel Rojas of Reno, a 3-0 winner over No. 2 Noah Castillo of Houston.
