Fresno State is close to hiring its next athletic director, sources said, and a decision could be made by the middle of next week if not sooner.
Among the prominent names from the pool of candidates are Oregon executive senior associate athletic director Jim Bartko, Ole Miss senior executive associate athletic director Stephen Ponder, UC Davis athletic director Terry Tumey and Louisiana-Monroe athletic director Brian Wickstrom.
Interviews with the 15-member search firm chaired by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Lynette Zelezny were conducted last week off campus. Fresno State President Joseph Castro has said he’s seeking a candidate who is strong in fundraising, which could fuel facilities improvements and help the department keep up with rising costs in Division-I athletics.
Fresno State has been looking for an athletic director since Thomas Boeh was reassigned by President Joseph Castro in August after eight years on the job and with three years remaining on his contract.
