After the first hour, the Fresno City College men’s soccer team found itself behind 1-0 at Clovis Community College in the first meeting between the the state-ranked No. 2 Ram and the first-year Crush.
The debut match in the new rivalry came with an exciting finish as the Rams scored a pair of late goals to win 2-1 Tuesday and remain unbeaten at 8-0-2 (1-0 Central Valley Conference).
Fresno caught a break in the 68th minute when Clovis midfielder Freddy Moreno saw a red card, leaving the Crush (3-4-2, 0-1) with 10 players.
Eight minutes later, the Rams equalized on Jose Ramirez’s rebound finish after a shot by Jose Torres bounced off the post. In the 84th, Ramirez dished a header off a corner kick to Johnny Rodriguez, who booted home his 12th goal of the season for the winner.
Sergio Gonzalez put the Crush (3-4-2, 0-1) ahead in the 53rd on an assist from Ozzy Torneo.
CVC action resumes Friday, with Clovis hosting College of Sequoias (4-3-1, 0-0-1) and Fresno City hosting Taft (5-1-2). Both matches are at 4 p.m.
The Crush and Rams will meet one more time this season, Oct. 28 at Fresno City.
